Jimerson in contention for roster spot

03/12/2006
On the move: Charlton Jimerson has worked himself into contention for a possible spot as a backup outfielder with the Major League club. Jimerson, 26, has displayed power and a good glove. He'll be a player to watch as Spring Training winds down.
On the pine: No injuries of note among prospects in the farm system.
Names in the game: Burt Hooton, pitching coach with Triple-A Round Rock, has been coaching in professional ball since 1988. He's in his second season at Round Rock after spending five seasons as pitching coach with the Astros. As a player, Hooton pitched 15 seasons in the Majors and posted a 151-136 record.
They're No. 1: Hunter Pence, the team's top pick in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, continues to climb through the ranks. Pence, a power hitter with a good glove, won the Rookie of the Year award for the South Atlantic League, which shows his progress through the ranks. Astros are deep enough in outfielders that they don't need to push Pence. Brian Bogusevic, the team's No. 1 pick in '05, is going through his first Minor League camp. He'll look to master the differences between pro and college baseball this camp.
Class of '05: The Astros remain high on their last draft class. Farm director Ricky Bennett pointed to infielder Koby Clemens, outfielder Josh Flores and outfielder Eli Iorg. Clemens and Iorg are sons of former Major Leaguers. All drew praise from Bennett for their work ethic. Bogusevic, a left-handed pitcher, is working on some mechanical things that'll help him with his pitchability.
Stat machine: Right-hander Fernando Nieve, fighting for a job in the Astros rotation, sports a 9.00 ERA after two appearances. Jason Hirsh, another candidate for a starter's spot, hasn't done much better. In two appearances, Hirsh's ERA is also 9.00. ... On the other end, Jimmy Barthmaier has looked strong in his two outings. His ERA after two appearances is 0.00 ERA.
What they're saying: "We've had some players go over and play in Major League games. They've done a nice job; they really have. Hunter Pence had been over there and played in some Major League games. ... The feedback we've gotten from Major League camp has been all positive." -- Bennett
